knitting: cashmere hats for the coming baby

weaving: at the loom

01/09/2011

I am expecting with baby no. 2 – due in two months!  I’ve been knitting lots of little socks and recently finished a pair of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s baby longies modified as shorts.  I’m also in the planning stages of weaving a rug for the baby’s room.  I’ll share more once the linen warp is on the loom…

This is the third time I’ve knit this cabled hat.  First in mélange wool (inspired after this gorgeous version).  Then in cashmere.  And now in tweed.

Slouchy and cozy.  My comfort knitting.

Pattern by Linda LaBelle using 4 and 5 mm needles in Brooklyn Tweed Shelter – 2 skeins, Fossil.

(Email Linda LaBelle at The Yarn Tree to purchase the pattern.)

Last night I finished sewing a toddler size jumper in Liberty of London kingly cord.  (Love the weight and texture of this fabric!)  I’m also close to binding off on a matching sweater.  It feels great to be making things again!  Over the summer days and months went by without the click of needles.  Piles of fabric went untouched.  Weaving shuttles gathered dust.  It made me realize that I simply cannot go without making something for very long.  My aunt recently told me that my grandmother was always working on a project.  Always had knitting or needlework in a basket by her chair.  She would know how I feel today.  A sense of balance returned through handwork.

Working on some small projects to ease myself back into knitting.  I’m looking forward to Fall and wool …

Working on hand knit linings for my wellies….. looking forward to jumping in puddles and watching everything bloom!

top: Photographed yesterday with an old camera (my regular is at the repair shop). The more it snows, the more I knit. I’ve finished two hats and knit lots of rows on my paper crane.

bottom: Leg warmers I knit a couple of years ago. Getting lots of use this winter!

Some new fabric -nani iro linen gauze- I love rolling up fabrics and tying them with string.
A new hat in swans island worsted for a toddler. Finally used the pom pom maker I bought before Christmas – didn’t know what I was missing!
Hope you are having a lovely week!

I participated in a lovely exchange with Kirsten. The wrap skirt she made is simply gorgeous.
The ribbon.
The fabric.
More photos to come….
At the moment I’m enjoying some lovely tea she sent and browsing a set of beauty.
